Patient Rights in the ICU

My chapter, "Patient Rights in the ICU" is now available in the Oxford Textbook

of Critical Care (2 ed.).

This chapter proceeds in seven stages. First, it explains the nature and source of patient rights. Secondly, it analyses the scope of patient rights. Thirdly, it describes five specific patient rights that are particularly  relevant to critical care. Fourthly, this chapter turns to discuss several ways in which patient rights might be illegitimately violated.

Fifthly, it discusses how patient rights might be justifiably infringed by distributive justice concerns and concerns grounded in professional integrity. Finally, this chapter concludes by describing four leading mechanisms by which patient rights are balanced against clinician rights.
